History of the Klingon Empire
|
The Klingon Empire is one steeped in history - a history of honour, bravery, and courage. However, it has not always been so. Before Kahless united the Empire by defeating Molor in 625, there was much turmoil and civil war. Little remains of this time period, but it is known that it was a dark period in Klingon history. After the unification of the Empire, Klingon society prospered. Kahless' teachings of honour spread throughout the Empire and gave Klingon culture a new focal point. A time of internal peace and prosperity followed, until the invasion by a group known as the Outsiders in 1325. The Outsiders pillaged Qo'noS, destroying many prized artifacts of Klingon culture, and going so far as to steal the Sword of Kahless, the first bat'telh, which Kahless had used to kill Molor. This was the greatest loss to the Klingon Empire since the death of Kahless, and to this day has not been forgotten nor forgiven. In 2218 the Klingon Empire made first contact with the United Federation of Planets. This was a disastrous encounter which nearly resulted in the annihilation of both crews. The conflict was eventually resolved, but relations between the two parties never improved. Eventually, the differences between the Klingon Empire and the Federation came to a head. While on the planet Organia, a peace treaty was imposed by the Organians, ending the hostilities between the two factions. It was an uneasy peace, however, and neither the Klingons nor the Federation put much faith in it, though no open conflicts occurred in the following years. The Klingon moon Praxis, which orbited the home world of Qo'noS, exploded in 2293, causing extensive damage to an already limited economic supply. The outlook for the Klingon Empire was grim, with few resources and no further ability to procure more. This predicament led Chancellor Gorkon to seek out an alliance with the Federation. While an alliance with the Federation was believed to be the only way for the continuation of the Klingon Empire, it was felt by many to be a threat to all they believed and held dear. The Klingon General Chang was one of several conspirators, including top StarFleet officials, who plotted the assassination of Chancellor Gorkon. After Gorkon was murdered, his daughter, Azetbur, took over as Chancellor of the High Council, and eventually concluded the Khitomer Accords, ending the hostilities between the Klingon Empire and the Federation, and securing a future for the Empire. More to come...
