Galae Uniform Regulations

DUTY UNIFORM

Duty uniform is the most basic of all Rihannsu fleet uniforms. It primarily consists of a jump suit that is a similar color to one's surroundings. It is seldom worn on board a ship, but can be for operations that require boarding alien vessels, away missions on planets, or military operations at wartime.

Rank pins are worn on the collar in subdued colors.

No sash is worn with this uniform.

A broad magnetic belt is often worn for easily carrying small items.

The slacks and sleeves of the top are baggy, and provide large air pockets to help maintain body temperature in most environments.

Security Options

As is the case with most uniforms, security personnel wear a gold tritanium helmet with this uniform. They may also wear a large holster for a disruptor pistol, or handle a disruptor rifle slung on the back.

Away Mission Options

Away teams may wear belt-and-suspender type load bearing equipment (LBE).

This LBE typically includes two canteens, a small pack in the back, two small pouches in front, an illumination device and a personal medical kit. The pack contains a personal shelter, blanket, food for three standard days, and a heater with an endurance of three standard days.

The small pouches at the waist in the front may be used to carry whatever the individual desires. The personal medical kit contains artificial skin (spray applicator), a hyposprayer with mild stimulants and sedatives, antiseptic ointment, mild anesthetic and a triangular bandage. The flashlight can be adjusted in brightness from 20 to 1000 candle power, focusing from 10cm spotlight to flood, and again has an endurance of three standard days.

Away teams may also wear a heavy hooded cloak for warmth or protection from debris such as sand storms.

Goggles may also be authorized, as well as breathing apparatus.

STANDARD UNIFORM

Standard uniform consists of a quilted charcoal-grey top and slightly baggy trousers that are tucked into pull-on boots that come to mid-calf in height.

Trousers are of a color that matches the officer's sash. (q.v.)

Traditionally a sash is worn over the right shoulder to indicate years of service. This sash formally indicated rank. The sash is pinned at the shoulder blade in the back, and hangs to the knee, ending in a row of heavy tassels that are black in color. The sash's color and stripe pattern indicates the years of service of the individual and is independent of the individual's rank.

The order of color is as follows:
                Green? Grey?........Add None
                Blue................Add five
                Red.................Add ten
Stripe patterns also indicate precisely how many years an officer has served by alternating thin and thick stripes. One thick stripe is worth five thin stripes. For example, if an officer wears a blue sash with three stripes on it, he has served a total of eight years. (Blue sash = 5 + 3 Stripes)

If an officer wears a red sash with a thick black stripe and two thin stripes, she has served a total of seventeen years. (Red sash = 10 + (1 Thick stripe = 5) + 2 Stripes)

In addition to bearing the seniority of an officer, the sash also holds the rank and department pins of the officer. These pins are worn on the sash over the right breast. The top-most pin is always the rank of the officer, the pin beneath is the officer's duty assignment.

Rank pins are arrangements of stars
in gold and silver and are as follows:

Security Options

Security staff may carry disruptors and wear helmets with this uniform.

Engineering Staff Options

Engineering staff may wear their anti-rad jump suits over this uniform.

Medical Staff Options

Medical staff may wear their sanitary or biohazard jump suits over this uniform.

Female Officer Options

Female officers may wear the uniform skirt. This uniform is being phased out, and most female officers wear the same uniform as the males. Female officers wearing the skirt must wear regulation black tights. (Governmental Quartermaster's Division - Item 10095K) These may be obtained from the galae QMD (Quarter Master's Division) at any spacedock facility.

DRESS UNIFORM

Dress uniforms are more traditional and comfortable. They consist of a tight blouse with side closure, slacks (or skirt) and almost knee-high boots. The color of the uniform is indicative of the service to which one is assigned. Other services use very similar uniforms for dress occaisions. Heads of state wear white. (Praetors, the Fvillha, etc.) State Officials wear green. (Governors, Regents, Prominent Senators, etc.)

The military has two colors that can be worn: black with red trim and grey with black trim. The black and red uniform is reserved for those who have had the honour of serving active space duty. Land-based military officers wear the grey and black.

A sash is worn with this uniform, but it bears only the years of service. It is worn around the waist, and hangs down almost to the ground at the left leg. Rank is worn on the collar of the uniform.

Command Rank Options

All officers of rank Arrain and up may wear a half-cape. (Cape hangs to mid-thigh, much like a cloak) All officers of rank Arrain and up may wear a dagger on their left hip.

Flag Rank Options

All officers of rank Riov and up may wear a full-cape. (Cape hangs almost to ground.) All officers of rank Riov and up may wear a sword on their left hip.

Female Officer Options

Female officers may wear a skirt with this uniform. Female officers must wear tights that match the color of the uniform, be that black and red (GQMD-10095K) or grey and black. (GQMD-10095E)

Dan's Notes

Much of the above is shot from the hip, and although it makes sense in a way, there is little canonical support for what the regulations are regarding uniforms. In "Balance of Terror" and "The Enterprise Incident" it is apparent that the pant color matches the sash, although the stripes are a bit mysterious. They don't seem to represent rank, although I feel that this is just a Trek inconsistency. After all, it was only the 9th episode the Romulans were introduced.

Here it is justified as being the years of service. I have nothing to really base this on except "logic" and my own imagination. In addition, there is a clear divergence from cannonical sources on one point. In both episodes, it is evident that rank is not worn as pins on the sash.

As for the uniform colors, "My Enemy, My Ally" states that the uniforms were changed, and in "The Romulan Way," it sites that the uniforms were black with red trim. This may be only military intelligence, but again it seems "logical" that this applies to the military in general.

Jesse's Notes,
These uniforms are superceeded by online, MILHELP uniform descriptions.
